The Martini may be one of the most famous cocktails out there and the Vodka Martini has its own patron (one certain fictional British spy) who has made it legendary. But one of the reasons we all love Martinis is that there are so many variations. This is one tasty example, the Pink Grapefruit Vodka Martini.

Where did the martini come from?

The original Martini is a gin cocktail that is made from 6 parts gin to 1 part dry vermouth (which is often known by the brand name Martini, just to confuse things further). No-one knows for sure where it came from but by the early 1920s, it was recognisable as the classic cocktail we enjoy today, although the ratios were a little different.

The dirty martini uses a little splash of olive brine or juice and is decorated with olives. A perfect martini mixes equal amounts of sweet and dry vermouth with the gin. Then there was the James Bond favourite martini that was ‘shaken not stirred’ but this is correctly called a Bradford.

What is a cocktail shaker?

This pink grapefruit vodka martini follows the James Bond approach which means it is shaken and to do that, you will need a cocktail shaker. Well, you could use an empty bottle, but it wouldn’t look quite as sophisticated.

There are three main types of shaker out there and countless styles and colours. The three main types are:

  • Cobbler shaker – this is often known as a three-piece shaker and has a built-in strainer in the lid with a cap to cover this while shaking. With this one, you don’t need a separate strainer so is a one-and-done approach
  • Boston shaker – this shaker is made up from two parts and is favoured by professional mixologists. It holds more liquid than a Cobbler but doesn’t have the built-in strainer
  • Parisian shaker – also known as the French shaker, this is a two piece shaker that has the shape of the Cobbler but no built-in shaker

With the Cobbler and Parisian shaker, the biggest problem can be that the shaking creates a seal that makes it hard to pull them apart. But you can always leave it to one side and allow it to warm up. On the other hand, the Boston shaker avoids this problem, but you do need to handle a separate cocktail strainer for most drinks.

Whatever type of shaker you choose, there’s no right or wrong, just what you like. Plus, you can always pick up a couple so you can experiment and see what works best!
