There are lots of ways to show your love at Valentine’s Day – roses, chocolates, a meal for two.  But if you want something simple and tasty, then choosing one of these gorgeous cocktails is a great idea.  You don’t need a lot of time, too many ingredients or any real experience to make them.  And some even have an aphrodisiac touch to them that’s perfect for the occasion!

Red Berries

Cranberry Flower Cocktail

Cranberry is best known for its place in the Cosmopolitan and this cocktail make use of the same glass, the Martini glass.

Take 2 ounces of gin, 0.75 ounces of lemon juice 2 tablespoons of cranberry flavoured simple syrup (sugar syrup).  You also need 6 cranberries which you muddle in the shaker before adding the juice and gin.  Shake and strain into the glass and serve with three more cranberries for a tasty looking red cocktail.

Raspberry Fizz Martini

Martinis are great drinks that require very little work and not much in the way of special equipment to make them.  This one also has that gorgeous cocktails appeal with the use frozen raspberries.

Mix Martini Rosso (red) with gin then just before serving, add ½ tsp to each of the champagne glasses.  Add the mixture and top with raspberries then top with chilled prosecco or another favourite sparkling wine.

Chambord Kir Royale

Kir Royale is on most lists of the best champagne cocktails and the colour change that comes from using Chambord makes it perfect for Valentine’s Day.  It is also one of the simplest gorgeous cocktails to make.

Take a champagne glass and add ¼ ounce Chambord then top with chilled champagne or sparkling white wine of your preference.  Garnish with a raspberry and a lemon twist.

Cherubs Cup

Another gorgeous cocktail, the Cherub’s Cup uses 1 ounce of Elderflower liqueur (the recipe recommends one called St Germain) with 2 ounces of vodka, ¾ ounce fresh lemon juice, ¼ ounce sugar syrup and 3 ounces of sparkling rose wine.  You also want one strawberry per drink.  Muddle the strawberry with the juice and syrup in a shaker then add ice, liqueur and vodka and shake.  Strain into a Collins glass and top with rose sparkling wine.

Chocolate

Chocolate Cherry ChaCha

Chocolate is popular for Valentine’s Day but doesn’t need to be limited to a box or a dessert.  This cocktail uses chocolate vodka to make a very tasty drink.  Add 1 ounce of cherry liqueur to a martini glass then add 1.5 ounces of coconut rum (Malibu) and ½ ounce of chocolate vodka.  Top with either club soda or sparkling water, stir and serve.

Chocolate Margarita

This is a chocolaty version of the margarita that uses chocolate milk – you can make your own if you are keen or grab a good quality product from the supermarket.  Mix three parts milk with 1 part silver tequila, 1 part either strawberry puree or a daiquiri mix, depending on your preference and stir to combine.  Pour into a glass and garnish with a chocolate dipped strawberry.

Love Potion #9

There’s got to be a love potion in a collection of Valentine’s Day cocktails and this one is very sweet.  You need a blender and add 1 ounce of either strawberry or vanilla flavoured vodka or just plain vodka if you can’t find them.  You also need ½ ounce white crème de cacao and ½ cup strawberries, fresh or frozen.  Add everything along with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to the blender and blend until smooth with ½ a cup of ice.  Pour into a chilled margarita glass and garnish with a strawberry.

Valentine’s Day Classic with a Twist

Pink Grapefruit Margarita

Another classic of the cocktail world is the margarita and this is a Valentine’s Day version that gets its pink blush colour from the use of pink grapefruit.

Mix table salt with caster sugar on a plate, wet the rim of the glass and roll it in the mix.  Then add 75ml tequila, 25ml Cointreau, 1 tablespoon agave and the juice of one pink grapefruit to a cocktail mixer.  Shake, strain into the glasses and add a curl of grapefruit peel.

Flirtini

This gorgeous cocktail gets its name from the passion fruit juice that features in it.  It is a quick make, just five minutes to have it ready and it looks lovely.

Mix 10oml vodka with a tablespoon of raspberry liqueur and 50ml passion fruit juice as well as a little ice into a cocktail shaker.  Shake and strain into martini glasses and top with half a passion fruit, floating seeds up.

The Rose

This is another simple cocktail that has that bright red colour to it.  To make, you need 2 ounces of dry vermouth (such as Martini) and one ounce of cherry brandy as well as a little raspberry syrup.  Add the ingredients to a glass with ice and stir then garnish with a brandied cherry.

Between the Sheets

I picked this one for the fun name rather than its Valentine’s Day colouring or anything.  It is also a very simple four ingredient cocktail that needs little work.

Take a cocktail shaker and add 1 ounce of cognac, triple sec and light rum along with a ¼ ounce of fresh lemon juice.  Shake and strain into a cocktail glass then finish with a twist of orange peel.

Maxwell Cocktail

For a fresh tasting cocktail that is designed to split into two champagne flutes, you need 1.5 ounces of cucumber vodka, 0.75 ounces cucumber juice, 0.25 ounces Cointreau, 0.5 ounces lemon juice and 0.25 ounces of agave nectar (which you find in the same aisle as honey in our supermarket).  To make the drink add everything to a cocktail shaker and fill with ice.  Shake and strain into two flutes then top with champagne.

Chocolate Strawberry Martini for two

This is another version of the chocolate martini, this time with added strawberry touches.  If you can get an oversized martini glass to share, go for it or otherwise just split into two.  Muddle 3 strawberries with 1 ounce of milk in a shaker then add 4 ounces of vodka, 2 ounces of chocolate liqueur and shake.  Strain into the glass and serve.
