What’s the Difference Between a Strawberry Margarita and Daiquiri?
Strawberry margaritas are similar to daiquiris, but the main difference is what type of liquor they use: tequila for strawberry margaritas and rum in daiquiri recipes. Frozen strawberry-flavored juice from a blender can be sweetened with either triple sec or simple syrup – whichever you prefer.
Do I need triple sec for margaritas?
I highly recommend adding in the triple sec or Cointreau to your margaritas. Triple sec (aka orange liquor) is added to most classic margarita recipes and adds a lovely citrus flavour. You could even try something like Grand Marnier but a basic triple sec is usually best.
What you need
- 1 16-oz. bag of frozen strawberries
- ¼ c. fresh lime juice (2 large limes)
- 4 oz. white tequila
- 2 oz. orange-flavored liqueur, such as Cointreau
- Lime wheels and whole fresh strawberries, to garnish
Optional:
- Ice or water, if needed, to adjust consistency after blending
- Coarse sugar and lime wedges to coat the glass rim
How to make a Frozen Strawberry Margarita
Place half the frozen strawberries into a high-powered blender. Add lime juice, tequila, and orange-flavored liquor. Cover and blend on the highest setting until smooth, approximately 1-2 minutes.
Remove the vent cap on the blender lid and add the remaining frozen strawberries one at a time while the blender is still running. Continue blending until all strawberries have been added and the mixture is completely smooth.
Note: For thicker margaritas, add some ice until desired consistency is reached. For a thinner consistency, add a little water.
Pour into serving glasses and garnish with lime wheels and/or fresh strawberries right before serving.
Can you make these Frozen Strawberry Margaritas ahead of time?
Whip up this margarita mix a day ahead of time and keep it in the freezer. The alcohol keeps the drink from freezing completely, so you can enjoy your frozen slushy without watering down its taste with ice cubes!
Recipe tips
If desired, rub a lime wedge along the top of each glass and dip into a shallow bowl filled with some coarse sugar before filling.
Recipe variations
If this recipe’s too boozy for you, cut back on the liquor: Try 1 ounce of tequila and 1/2 ounce each triple sec and lime juice.
If you want a fruitier drink, add more berries to the blender.
Add other fruits to create a custom margarita. Bananas, blueberries, mango, peach, pineapple, and raspberry will complement the strawberry well. An example could be a Mixed Berry Frozen Margarita.
Mocktail version
For the mocktail version, you’ll need:
- 1 16-oz. bag of frozen strawberries
- 1/3 c. fresh orange juice (1-2 large oranges)
- 1/3 c. fresh lime juice (3 large limes)
- 1/3 c. water
- Lime wheels and/or fresh strawberries, to garnish
- Ice or water, if needed, to adjust consistency after blending
- Coarse sugar and lime wedges to coat the glass rim
- 1-2 T. simple syrup (1-part sugar dissolved into 1-part warm water and cooled slightly), to sweeten
Prepare as described for the cocktail version, but replace the ingredients described in Step #1 with those listed here.
How to Make a Shaken Strawberry Margarita
The best way to shake up a strawberry margarita is with fresh or thawed strawberries. You can also try using homemade syrup and adding liquors, lime juice, and ice. For an even more unique twist on this classic cocktail, skip the berries altogether by pouring in some of your favourite fruit liqueur from scratch!
