What is the Metropolitan cocktail?

Chuck Coggins, the chef at Marion’s Continental Restaurant & Lounge in New York City, created the dish. After fleeing to the United States from Hungary after winning a gold medal at the Paris Peace Games after World War II, fashion model Marion Nagy opened Marion’s in 1950.

What you’ll need to make a Metropolitan cocktail

  • 2 Ounces Brandy
  • 1 Ounce Sweet Vermouth
  • ¼ Ounce Simple Syrup
  • 6 Dashes Bitters

About the ingredients

This sophisticated and transparent cocktail is a great way to use top-shelf brandy. It’s a wonderful choice for the metropolis if it’s a brand you enjoy on its own or in cocktails like the B&B.

Sweet vermouth is a fortified wine that has a shorter shelf life than other bottles on the store’s liquor shelf. If your bottle has been open for more than three months, it’s most likely past its expiration date and should be discarded.

At-home simple syrup is cheap and simple to produce. All you need are sugar and water, although the stovetop may be helpful.

Angostura bitters are used to flavor this and other traditional cocktails. Angostura is the preferred aromatic bitters in today’s world. There are many more bitters on the market now, some of which have unique tastes that may provide a little unusual twist to the urban environment.

How to make the cocktail

Pour all of your ingredients into a mixing glass. Stir thoroughly for about 30 seconds over ice.

Fill a cocktail glass halfway with your drink mixture, then strain it into the cup to minimize ice.

Garnish with a cherry and slice of lemon if desired, and serve.

Recipe tips

It is best to chill your glass for 30 minutes in the fridge to keep it colder for longer. You may either add ice to your serving glass or not, but it dilutes the beverage and is a personal choice.

Shake this drink before serving. Stir lightly for the best results.

Recipe Variations

Instead of simple syrup, use 1/2 teaspoon superfine sugar to sweeten the metropolitan (also called bar sugar).

The brandy Manhattan substitutes the sugar and less vermouth. Stir 2 ounces brandy, 1/2 ounce vermouth, and a dash of aromatic bitters with ice in a cocktail glass to make it. This is described as a brandy vermouth cocktail in “The Savoy Cocktail Book” (1930).

In “The Old Waldorf-Astoria Bar Book” (1935), A.S. Crockett recounts a city version that calls for 2/3 Manhattan bitters and 1/3 vermouth. There is no brandy or bitters in the recipe.

The Harvard cocktail is a sweetened brandy drink that was created at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In this traditional method, 1 1/2 ounces brandy, 1/2 ounce sweet vermouth, 1/4 ounce lemon juice, 1 teaspoon grenadine, and a dash of bitters are combined and shaken before being strained.

If you can’t choose between brandy and whiskey, make a Saratoga cocktail. It incorporates both beverages with sweet vermouth.
