What is Irish Cream?
It’s an Irish cream liqueur (hence, it is alcoholic), consisting of Irish whiskey and cream. Other elements are often added to give it the ideal sweet flavour. The famous brand is Bailey’s. It’s frequently used in making Irish coffee, but it’s also fantastic in this milkshake.

Bailey’s Original Irish Cream
Buy it nowDo you have to use Baileys Irish Cream?
Baileys Original Irish Cream is definitely the best known of the Irish cream liqueurs out there and many people use it’s name just to describe the type of drink. But there’s nothing that says you can only go with it! Any type of Irish cream liqueur will work in a similar way and there are a few brands available depending on where you are in the world.
Or you could go in another direction and use a different liqueur entirely. Something like Kahlua or other coffee flavoured liqueurs would work nicely with this milkshake recipe.
What you need to make Bailey’s Milkshake
- 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
- 2 oz. Bailey’s Irish Cream
- 2 cups ice
- 3 oz. milk
- Ghirardelli chocolate syrup for topping
- Whipped cream for topping

How to make the recipe
Place ice and ice cream into a blender.

Add in Bailey’s Irish cream and milk. Blend well.

Drizzle chocolate syrup into a glass. Make sure to get all sides. Pour in a milkshake or other tall glass.
Top with whipped topping. Drizzle with more chocolate syrup and add a straw.
Storing the recipe
If you have too much milkshake, you can store it in the fridge without the topping and syrup and then finish making it later. Or you can make boozy popsicles by adding the milkshake into popsicle moulds and freezing for 4-5 hours.
Recipe tips
If you want to transform this into a more chocolate version, you can swap the vanilla ice cream for chocolate ice cream. You can also add 1 ounce of chocolate liqueur and reduce the amount of Bailey’s in it (or just add on top if you like a little extra booze!)
Another variation is to use strawberry ice cream and grab some fresh strawberries. Put them through the blender then add the ice cream and Bailey’s for a strawberry version of this milkshake.
